I’ve had a long think about my favourite smells. Some
almost, but didn’t quite, make it - pear drops, creosote, a beer or two. Others
were never even close to getting on the list – babies, 4711, frying bacon, salt
and vinegar crisps.
Anyway, here’s the list and over time I’ll probably write
about why I like each smell so much.
1. Cut grass
2. The road after rain
3. Cooked onions
4. India
5. Soap
6. Clean sheets
7. The sea
8. Rum and ginger beer
9. A freshly opened tin of Coffee
10. Paraffin

ReplyDeleteSun warmed wooden fence panels treated with preservative. Reminds me of going swimming in the outdoor pool at my infants school in the small Thames side village of Wargrave, where I grew up as a child.

ReplyDelete1,2,5 (if its coal tar),6,7 are the same for me. I'll swap your tin for fresh ground, and rum for JD. 10 is just weird.
Weirder than you think

ReplyDeleteThe preservative almost certainly was creosote back in the day. An important chemical note in the overall perfume granted, equally I was reminded of it earlier today. A non-creosote variant? There is something about the warmth of the sun especially and its effect on treated rough wood. Another evocative fragrance for me is sun heated newspaper and cigarette smoke .... and distant daylight bonfires .... and patchouli and .... you are right Andi, smells are a creative springboard
