I painted this after a winter’s walk. The storm, far out at
sea, seemed to be a turmoil of colour and movement. I watched it, clicking away on my camera, for a while
and realised it was moving towards the headland where I stood watching. The wind
stiffened and suddenly I could feel the snow in the air even though I couldn’t see it and the wind picking up my scarf like a tatty tartan flag even
though the sun was still shining.
It didn’t take long to get to me and then, in a strange mix
of snow and hail, I was walking as quickly as I could away from the approaching darkness. The car a warm welcome
relief when I eventually reached it.
Back home, I immediately sketched out what I’d seen in pastel on canvas and later, over the course of a couple of days, tried to
capture in oil paint what I’d seen and more importantly how it had felt.
I think I nearly managed it.

DeleteI couldn't paint if my life depended on it...unless I'm allowed to cheat and do it in photoshop, lol.
Andrew Height
DeleteI should shut myself away for a week and see what I come up with.

ReplyDeleteThe light and texture is wonderful. Turner couldn't do better.
Andrew Height
DeleteOh, I think Turner might have done it a tad better.

ReplyDeleteOh so you don't want to paint, you just want a fight with Turner . Be careful, I think he might be pretty good with a cutlass

ReplyDeleteI thought it was a Turner!

ReplyDeleteVery Turner esc... My compliments for what it's worth.
Andrew Height
DeleteThanks Mitch. It is easy to be Turneresque if you actually see the wind as it blows the light... and I do fortunately.
Mitch Nama
DeleteIt's really a great piece, the more I look at it the more I can see. It would be cool to see it in person. What are the dimensions?
Andrew Height
DeleteIt isn't that big Mitch. about 3ft high and a couple of feet wide. I've been planning a couple of big canvasses in a similar style for ages, but I am lazy.
