A bloody mess...

I was going to write about blackberry picking today but somehow, with the events of the last 24 hours, it isn’t uppermost in my mind. Yes, another beheading; this time it was a man who was just trying to help, an aid worker if you will. Undoubtedly a very brave man, a man who believed in what he was doing, a man who risked it all and lost. Do I admire him? Well, I do and I don’t. I do because he stood up to the bullies and tried to help the needy. I don’t because the risks and consequences were always far too dangerous. Perhaps he believed too much. Perhaps he thought that it wouldn’t happen to him. I can understand that.

Now, with his brutal killing, the world is yet again outraged and uproared as it should be. People call for our government to ‘stop being soft’, others try to whip up hatred of Muslims regardless of who they are or what they believe, there are calls to send in the troops again to stop ‘them’ taking over. It’s almost as if we have played no part at all in this terrible mess.

Let’s not forget that we have been fiddling with this area throughout history or that we went in and destabilised the region very recently based on political lies of ‘weapons of mass destruction’. I’m not saying that the actions of ISIS are justified and I’m certainly not saying that they are right. But let’s not pretend that our own actions have not contributed to this mess. There is blame on our part too.

War is always terrible, terrorism unforgivable. But young men are easily persuaded and evil men are good persuaders. Rebels without causes are just that, young blood will always find a cause to fight for socialism, freedom, even their country and gladly go into hell with god on their side. What do we do? I don’t know. It isn’t as simple as ‘walk away’; the problem is with us in our own country – albeit not to the extent that some might want us to believe.

That is the thing with this new, much smaller, world we have made. There is no isolation, we really are interdependent, almost too close to each other, and that – more than anything else – is the problem I fear. Each of our actions touches another; even a comment on Facebook can incite big emotions; as I know to my cost.

With this in mind I say this: it is for each of us to keep our own calm in the face of these atrocities. It is for each of us to remember that we are all involved and that our actions and words have an effect. There are seven and a half billion people in the world, all but a very, very few have never decapitated another person or ever would. They are of all races and religions and a proportion is Muslim, just as a proportion is Christian, Buddhist, or has no belief at all.

Most people in this world are good, but evil exists in pockets everywhere - it isn’t the province of a single group or religion. Most are disgusted with what is taking place, but it is easy to forget that and set the dogs running.

Please hang on to that thought and keep the hounds at bay.

Should have done blackberry picking. Anyway, it's all in the painting if you look closely enough.

    No thanks.

Yes Glynne, good choice. What you see in that painting is down to the person looking.

I hate stuff like this. I'd much rather think about it myself than be told what to think and how to react. I appreciate your knowledge of the world and it's history but I'd rather think about things based on what I see through my own eyes.

    Andrew Height
And so you should Glynne. I'm not telling you what to think. I'm recording what I think.

I've seen a lot of posts similar to this today. Its an emotive subject and everyone is entitled to their opinion. Read your post again, its not just what you're thinking its what you think people should be thinking. It's done in a well thought out way based on your experiences, but I don't think like you. There are lots of 'we' and 'our' in your post and not many 'I's.

    Your painting is lovely though

    Andrew Height
Could be because We struggle to work out what I am feeling about all this Glynne. One of me wants to attack the perpetrators of this, another wants to try and rationalise it, yet another wants to bury his head in the sand. What do you want me to do? Keep quiet about how I feel? I've seen those posts too. I think that I like to think that we are working through this. Not that it matters, I can't change anything. I wish I saw things as clearly as you - but I don't.

It is far too easy sometimes to see black and white, good against evil, truth against lies. All I can do is try to work these things out for myself and I write them down as a reminder to myself as to who I am at that point in time. I don't know; tomorrow I could be baying for blood or preying for forgiveness, but I don't ever want to fool myself into thinking it wasn't my responsibility to say what I was feeling. I might not be a good one, but that is what writers and bloggers do.

  6. Background - why I wrote this - my Facebook status when the news came through

Off to bed, shaking my head in disbelief, and so grateful that I have a head to shake. I hate all this and I hate where it is going to end up. I can't even guess at what the solution is.

It feels like there isn't one. Disgusting, sickening.

Kathryn Salthouse Nor can I Andy I'm really troubled by all, just wish the world would wake up and realise we are being taken over! If we don't put a stop to it. We've been soft for far too long!

    Peter Burns
Totally disgusting and like everyone else have no idea how this is going to end. The world does need to waken up and smell the coffee or we could end up being overrun by terrorists

    Andrew Height
I have to keep reminding myself that there are 7.5 billion people in the world and only a few of them are terrorists. There are even fewer that would behead innocent people. Most of the world is good. We have to remember that and keep perspective no matter what.

    Andrew Height
    Hard though it is.

    Kathryn Salthouse
I find that hard right now

    Ian Maclachlan
Don't blame races. It is all down to individuals. We ALL need to remember.

    Cloe Fyne
Scary scary shit! How anyone can actually behead someone is completely beyond me!! There are some back fuckers out there! x

    Andrew Height
Kevin I think that you know the answer to that.

    Andrew Height
Cloe - bad news I'm afraid. Back in the Malaysian emergency in the fifties British troops regularly beheaded communists with the full backing (orders from) the UK government. I still think that your question is the right one though.

    Lynda Henderson
Very sad and scary. I am not optimistic about the world right now. What do the terrorists want exactly? Would anything please them and stop their campaign?

    Andrew Height
Extremists are never satisfied whether they be Christians, communists, Muslims, or animal activists. Unfortunately they have a right to their views and as long as they don't hurt anybody with them that is fine. This isn't fine, but do we police the world or focus on our own countries? I am more for the latter than the former. We have meddled to no

Morning Andy. Nothing against your blog. It's always thought provoking, interesting and well written. I'll just have to disagree with your thoughts on this one though. I just can't understand why someone would want to rationalise the thinking of these people.

No worries Glynne. Plenty of room for us to have our own opinions and ideas. I am mainly thinking aloud to myself. Helps me make sense of things sometimes. Have a great Sunday.

good to hear such strong condemning statements from Islamic leaders in this country, calling for justice against the perpetrators. Remember, this mindless scum of a group are committing evil and horrendous crimes against hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the Middle East. I cannot begin to understand how well educated, intelligent people are being sucked into joining them.

That is what I'm trying to work out in my blog Steve. I think it's a combination of youth, excitement, misguided belief, indoctrination, and ultimately weakness and fear. It is the same in any conflict. Atrocities are always committed on all sides. That is no excuse though.

Hopefully the strong words (condemning IS) from the Islamic leaders will counter some of the vitriol being pushed by the radical preachers, and make the young more impressionable ones think a bit about beliefs rather than just follow like sheep. And you are right, atrocities have always been committed (by all sides) in conflicts, but this group have taken it to a new level - against anyone (irrespective of race or religion) who doesn't believe in their warped views.

It's an unfortunate truth that the British army beheaded Malaysian men, women, and children in our lifetime Steve. Their only sin was communism and the British government sanctioned it, in fact demanded it. Of course it wasn't widely publicised on the Internet back then. I think the fact that is there on our screens for all to see maybe why we feel these terrorist's actions all the more.
